General Information

Workspace™ in an integrated classroom training solution used in a collaborative classroom environment. Workspace™ enhances educator productivity by allowing them to focus more time on improving student learning and increasing their performance. Workspace functionality includes:

Annotation tools for use in adding comments and notations on the Workspace™ page

Multimedia Tools to add multimedia files to lessons or for use during instruction

Focus Tools to highlight components of the lesson

Handwriting Recognition Tool that converts handwritten text to the most legible format

The bluez packages can be installed using your specific Distribution's Package Manager. For more information on Linux Bluetooth support, please see http://www.bluez.org/

After confirming that the required bluez packages are installed, please make sure that the rfcomm service is running. See your distribution-specific documentation to determine how you can check this.

"sudo" must be installed to a location that is included in the system's default search path; otherwise it will not be found. The default search path on most systems includes '/usr/bin', but you should refer to your system's documentation for more details.

This package adds support for running 32 bit applications within a 64 bit Operating System. Please see your specific distributions documentation for information on installing the "ia32-libs" package.

Known Issues

General Operation

If you are using eInstruction® applications together, such as: Response, Workspace™, CPS, ExamView®, you will need to upgrade all of these applications to the latest released version in order for Device Manager to communicate properly among them.

On Mac OS X, the installation may fail with JAVA 1.5.0 (64-bit) installed and the system default language set to Turkish. A workaround is to change the system default language to something other than Turkish.

On the Mac, the "Ink" System Preferences Panel is activated only when a GTCO CalComp/Interwrite USB device, is plugged in. A bug in OS X that was introduced in OS X 10.4 prevents Bluetooth devices from being able to activate Inkwell (handwriting recognition).

On the Mac, when operating in Whiteboard Mode, the cursor pointer on the computer screen remains where the system mouse last pointed. The electronic Pen draws correctly on the whiteboard, but the Pen pointer does not follow it on the computer screen.

While installing on Linux, the application windows may display incorrectly or as a blank screen when using 3D Window Managers such as Beryl or Compiz. If you experience problems, please refer to your specific distribution's documentation on how to disable enhanced 3D effects. This issue may also affect the usability/operation of our Java applications.

Workspace

On Mac OS 10.4.11, when PowerPoint displays a presentation in full screen mode and the Capture button is pressed on the Workspace toolbar, PowerPoint switches to design mode. Once the user selects either full or partial capture, the PowerPoint presentation should then switch back to full screen mode. Instances have been reported, where the PowerPoint presentation does not switch back to full screen mode after the user makes the capture selection.

On Linux, when PowerPoint displays a presentation in full screen mode, the Workspace toolbar does not show on top. Use ALT+Tab to switch to the Workspace toolbar, as a workaround.

When Keynote is in slideshow mode and the capture button is pressed on the Workspace toolbar, the Keynote slideshow is minimized and the user is unable to capture the slide.

When a GWB file is created with a locked object on a Windows system, the object can be edited on a Mac or Linux system without first unlocking the object.

When running some Debian based Linux distributions with the KDE Desktop Environment, printing from Java applications including Workspace Java may not function correctly. One workaround is to export your Workspace project to a PDF and then print the PDF using your preferred application.

In Whiteboard Mode, there is a couple seconds time delay when switching pens. If you are using multiple Whiteboard pens, please wait a few seconds before you start drawing after the new pen is placed in proximity of the Whiteboard.

The Stylus Pen Eraser and Right-Click Eraser Puck function are not active. Please use the Eraser Tool to erase annotations.

When in MU Mode, after annotating with 9 Multi User Devices constantly for greater than 2 minutes on a single page, a delay is introduced and drawing starts to slow down. Workaround is to create a new page and continue drawing on the new page. The delay will be more noticeable on computer systems with a single processor than those with a dual core processor.

Handwriting Recognition has been disabled in Workspace for 64 bit Linux until further notice.

Workspace Gallery:

Does not support drag & drop any files to WS toolbar directly as in WS windows

No image import from device (e.g., camera)

No right click menu options for export to Gallery

No Gallery support for all audio/video, ExamView, Flash file, GWB, & PDF file formats

Some Gallery buttons appear selected when Gallery is first opened

When trying to capture the Workspace annotation window on Mac, other application windows in the background appear on top. To work around this issue, minimize all windows on the desktop except the Workspace annotation window. Then select the Capture tool option from the Toolbox menu.

On Mac, Workspace may take several minutes to shutdown when “Automatically Save Pages” is enabled and the GWB file is being saved to a Windows share using SMB.

On Linux systems, Arabic and Hebrew characters may not display properly until the Arabic and Hebrew Language Support is installed.

Device Manager

The Softkeys on the Mobi™ Learner may not work properly if the device is connected while the software is being newly installed or upgraded. Remove the Mobi™ Learner from Device Manager, and rediscover the device for resolution.

When you use the button on the side of the Mobi™ Pen (sometimes referred to as the right or top button) to perform a Ctrl-Click, depress and hold the button for a second or two before releasing it. Do not press rapidly more than once as the system may enter a state in which it seems that no button presses were processed, either from the Pen or mouse. The cursor will move, but no button presses/mouse clicks are processed. To mitigate, hold the Pen close to the whiteboard or tablet and press the upper button on the Pen an additional one or two times. The system will return to normal

Device Manager no longer supports plug-n-play for the Bluetooth adapter.
If the Bluetooth adapter is plugged into the computer after Device Manager is started, the user will have to click Discover Devices to get the Bluetooth adapter and devices connected.
If the Bluetooth adapter is plugged into the computer before Device Manager is started, it will be detected on startup.

If a Bluetooth device is turned on while Device Manager is attempting to connect to it, Device Manager might report that the device successfully connected, the device might beep to signal connection, and the user might even be able to manually beep the device, but mouse position input from the device will not be processed. In this case, the device should be manually disconnected and connected again.

If a Bluetooth USB adapter is disconnected from the computer while a Bluetooth device is connected, Bluetooth communications can be permanently disabled, and the computer has to be rebooted. Simply plugging the adapter back in will not fix the problem.

Programmable buttons can be programmed to perform functions or launch applications. They cannot be programmed to launch files in the application associated with the file.

OS X 10.4 - On the "Select Bluetooth Service" dialog, a list of previously connected devices is maintained. If one of these devices fails to connect when it is selected, change the "Device Category" pop-up from the default setting of "All Categories" to "Discovered Devices." Then, click on the Search button to scan for all currently available devices.

OS X 10.4 - In the "Select Bluetooth Service" dialog, there is no way of distinguishing between different devices of the same type. All whiteboards will display the same device name, as will all tablets of the same type. It is recommended that the "Local Name" option under the "Device Properties" button be used to give each device a unique name. Note: unique names will appear for the MeetingPad 400 and SchoolPad 400.

On SuSe 10.2, there is an issue with the Bluetooth service recognizing the Bluetooth USB Adapter when the system is booted with the adapter plugged in.

This is a SuSe 10.2 issue and can be resolved by:

Unplugging the Bluetooth USB Adapter, waiting a few seconds, and then plugging it back in.

Or, restarting the Bluetooth service by typing the following command as root user "/etc/init.d/bluetooth restart".

When using lower button on pen as an eraser sometimes a spot is placed on the page after the erasing is completed.
To avoid this assign the pen button to a null.
In Device Manager > Files > Preferences > Pen Buttons. Select Lower Button then Workspace tools. Select the blank line then Ok.

In Ubuntu, Java windows may appear blank when Desktop Effects are enabled. To disable Desktop Effects, select System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects and then, select None.

A duplicate USB device will appear in Device Manager each time a supported USB device is physically moved to a different USB port. The USB port address is used by Device Manager to uniquely identify and store user preferences for a device. When the USB device is physically attached, only the device with the matching USB address will be shown as connected in Device Manager, all other duplicated devices will be shown as disconnected.

On Ubuntu, some devices will show as still connected in Device Manager after they have been physically disconnected. This bug has been fixed in the Linux kernel of Ubuntu 9.10 and later.

After updating the DualBoard firmware, the RFCOM version will not display correctly until the DualBoard is turned off and restarted.

The Ubuntu OS may become unresponsive when an eInstruction USB device is connected to the system using an external USB hub. To work around this issue with eInstruction products, the USB device should be connected directly to the system’s USB port.

When the "Switch primary and secondary buttons" option is selected from the Mouse Properties in the Windows Control Panel, the eInstruction pen’s tip will function as right-click instead of a left-click.

When using the Mobi View’s virtual keyboard on Mac OS 10.4, Unicode characters will not function: ≈√¬∆∑≠≥≤₤¿¡«»€ÁÀÂÄÆÇÉÈÊËÍÎÏÑÓÒÔÖÕŒßÚÙÛÜŸáàâäæçéèêëíîïñóòôöõœßúùûüÿ This issue was observed with eInstruction applications using the default system keyboard (English, Apple Keyboard). Other applications and system keyboards may not experience the same issue.

When using the Mobi View’s virtual keyboard on Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6, the following Unicode characters do not function: áàâäéèêëíîïñóòôöõúùûüÿÀÄÉÈÊËÑÖÕÙÛÜŸ₤ This issue was observed with eInstruction applications using the default system keyboard (English, Apple Keyboard). Other applications and system keyboards may not experience the same issue.

On Mac OS 10.6, eInstruction USB devices will not function with 64-bit Kernel and Extensions enabled. Please contact your System Administrator or IT Staff in order to switch to the 32-bit Kernel.

Installation Information

Installing the Workspace software from the Workspace CD

Log into the system with an account that has administrative privileges. Linux users should log in as "root" or use "sudo" when launching the installation.

Insert the Workspace CD. Double-click on the CD icon that appears on your desktop. Double click on the "Install Workspace" icon to launch the installation.

Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation of the Workspace software.

Mobi View™ support

“Presenter” mode support

Dragging Workspace™ Gallery images to the desktop on Mac no longer drops the image as a text file.

Drag and Drop Toolbar Resizing - It's easier than ever to configure the Workspace toolbar to the exact size and shape you require for use on your computer. Chose any number of rows or columns for your toolbar by simply dragging any edge of the toolbar.

Right-click Menus - Now you can choose to make changes to tools or objects using either our Properties Bar or Floating Menus. The Properties Bar makes all attributes for an object or tool available at the bottom of the page. The Floating Menus make these same attributes available with a simple right-click anywhere on the Workspace page.

Drag and Drop Toolbar Customization - Changing the available tools in the Workspace toolbars has never been easier. Simply drag any tool you like into or out of the toolbar and it's immediately available for use.

Email a Workspace File - There's no need to use an external email program when you can simply email your lesson directly from Workspace software. You can choose to send the file in Workspace or PDF format.

Create Calendar Page - Calendar pages are a great tool for classroom management. Choose any month and year and a monthly calendar is instantly available on your Workspace page.
